Lens filters - effects and protection for lenses

In addition to the choice of subject and time, the technology used plays a decisive role in the perfect composition of an image. Not only camera and lenses have an influence on the image composition and its quality, but also special accessories such as lens hoods, flashes and filters are essential for an optimal shot. Filter systems not only promote creativity in the image composition of ambitious amateur photographers and professionals, they are also a useful tool for minimizing image corrections that are necessary after the event, for taking pictures under special conditions and for protecting the lens from damage (e.g. sand, dust, scratches).(e.g. sand, dust, scratches, sea water). A distinction is made between filter holder systems, in which a filter is attached with the aid of an adapter, and rotating filters, which are screwed directly onto the respective lens. The most important filters used in photography are polarizing filters and neutral density filters (ND, gray filters). The former is indispensable especially in landscape photography by removing reflections of reflecting surfaces. Image-optimizing effects of polarization are a clearer blue, sharper contrasts and the unclouded view under a water surface. An ND filter is used to darken the subject in order to allow longer exposure times, especially in daylight, and to prevent overexposure of the shot. For protection and further effects, graduated, skylight and UV filters are also used. Among the best-known brands are Hoya, Rodenstock, B W and Hama. Lens manufacturers such as Canon, Sigma, Nikon etc. also offer their own filters. In addition, there is a wide range of products from optical specialists such as Zeiss and Leica.
