Bodycams help officers to secure situations that pose a danger to police officers. These can later be presented in court as video evidence, allowing judges to better assess the situation. These recordings also help the police to train their colleagues to deal with situations in a more targeted manner.
The cameras have proven their robustness in a number of tests, for example, they can withstand very hot or icy frosty days. From 50?C summer heat to freezing cold days with -50?C. Bodycams can also withstand falls from a height. Tested in this way, these cameras can withstand a height of around 1.80 meters. The bodycams also manage a long shift effortlessly, with their lithium-ion batteries providing 12 hours of operation.
When is the use of a bodycam permitted?
In order for a bodycam to be used, legal requirements first had to be created. These were created in 2016 with Section 15c of the NRW Police Act. Specifically, this paragraph reads: "Data collection through the use of recording devices worn close to the body". This means that the use of bodycams in homes is only permitted if protection against an urgent threat to life or limb is required.
Police experience shows this
Bodycams have been in use by the NRW police since June 19, 2020. Since then, the police have had many positive experiences with the use of bodycams.
The mere carrying or switching on of the bodycam has already led to a de-escalation of the situation.
